Maine Family Vacation

Your unplugged, relaxing, private summer getaway

Wake up to the call of a loon. Explore. Unwind under the stars.

Life is too busy. Unplug and slow down at Macannamac Camps. Enjoy a cozy log cabin after a day of paddling, swimming, birding and wildlife watching, looking for wild flowers, fishing, or simply relaxing. Our comfortable camps provide warm dry opportunities to enjoy the outdoors without the hassle of being rained out or cold. For those that have youngsters that would like to enjoy the tenting experience with the insurance of a comfortable bed nearby, pitch a tent in our flat dry areas right on site near your camp rental and let the kids get their tent fix!

Why make Macannamac your next family vacation home base? The privacy and quiet. Each of our lakeside cabins has its own private path to the water and dock. That means privacy. Our cabins are spread out, meaning when you are on your porch, you can’t see other camps.

Oh, and don’t leave your dogs at home! We love our furry guests.

Canoeing & Kayaking

Our lakeside camp rentals include kayaks and canoes free of charge. Paddle in front of your lakeside cabin or the nearby Allagash Wilderness Waterway.

Allagash Wilderness Waterway paddling trips made easy! Please call for overnight accommodations prior to and following your canoe trip. Transportation to and from your start and finish can be arranged in advance for guests.

Wildlife Watching, Birding, and Wildflowers

Northern Maine’s vast forests and waters are exceptional wildlife habitat. You are more likely to come across a moose foraging on aquatic vegetation as you paddle early in the morning than another person. Snowshoe hare, Canada lynx, white-tailed deer, and moose are just a few species you may spot. A birder’s delight anytime of the year, it’s not uncommon to see 10+ species in a day in the summer, featuring several warblers.

To name a few bird species you may see: American Three-Toed Woodpecker and Black-Backed Woodpecker (hint: find black spruce tree stands); American Woodcock, Bald Eagle, Boreal Chickadee (find thicker stands of spruce and balsam fir), Black-throated Blue Warbler, Common Loon, Evening Grosbeak, Gray Jay/Canada Jay (the official welcoming crew of the North Maine Woods!), Golden Eagle (very rare), Northern Goshawk, Olive-sided Flycatchers, Purple Finch, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Red-tailed Hawks, Ruffed Grouse and Spruce Grouse, Sharp-Shinned Hawk, and White-winged Crossbill. Don’t forget your binoculars!

You are likely to come across wild flowers, such as Red trillium, Painted Trillium, Twinflower, Fairy Calypso Orchid, Yellow Lady Slipper, Pink Lady slipper, Mayflower, White Fringed Orchid, Rose Pogonia, Grass Pinks Orchid, Pitcher Plant, Coltsfoot, and Arethusa Orchid.

Stargazing

northern lights and big dipper in the North Maine Woods

You’ve heard about Maine’s pristine forests and waters, but have you heard about our pristine dark starry night skies?

Thanks to our remote location with minimal light pollution, you’ll see thousands of stars in all their glory and the skies will likely seem bigger than you’ve ever seen.

If you get lucky, you may even see the dancing green waves of the Northern Lights (most likely in winter, but can sometimes be seen in fall and spring).

Can you find the big dipper?
